The Longing Of The Lord

If we approach our daily scripture reading as simply mere reading, then more often than not, we will get nothing out of it. But if we approach our daily scripture reading expecting to get something out of it, expecting to meet our creator face to face, expecting to learn more about who He is, about His character, about His heart, then God will be faithful to meet us each and every day with exactly what we need to face the day’s challenges. God wants us first and foremost to set aside time for Him and only Him. He is a jealous God. He covets us and our time. He longs to spend intimate time with us, and I’m speaking of more than just 5 minutes so we can say, we read our bibles that day. Please understand, I am not speaking of a set quantity of time here. I am speaking of time spent with our loving creator where our hearts touch His heart. This time could be 5 minutes one day and 5 hours the next day. I don’t think there is a set quantity of time, but I do believe there is a quality of time that the Lord longs to have with us. Time that we can’t wait for. Time that is so precious to us that we are willing to say no to some of the other activities in our lives just to make sure we don’t miss out on that special time.

For those of us who are married, I want us to think back to the period of time before we got married. Think of the moments that we spent apart from our soon to be husband. We could not wait until we saw him again. We could not wait until we had the next phone conversation with him. We wanted to spend every waking moment we could with him. This is the kind of relationship God longs for us to have with Him. He wants us to be excited about getting back into His presence. His heart yearns for ours to be intimately connected with his each and every day. He doesn’t want us to simply read the scriptures for the sake of being able to say we’ve done it. He wants us to yearn to read His love letter written to us. Truly, that is what scripture is. It is a love letter written to the people of God, especially for them from His heart to ours.  

Lord, I pray that you show us how to connect with your heart each and every day. I pray that we come to a place where we just can’t handle being apart from you. I pray that we grow more in love with you than we ever have, that our hearts become so intertwined with you that we truly don’t even want to leave your presence. I thank you that you are a jealous God. I thank you that you covet our time, that you desire so deeply and desperately to have an intimate relationship with each one of us. Your love is more than we can ever comprehend, but it is your desire to show it to us in abundance! Fill us this week and every week with a yearning and a longing for you. Open the eyes of our hearts Lord. We want to see you, know you and love you more!
